Fire Alarm Testing and Maintenance

What is Fire Alarm Testing?

Elecheck inspect, test and maintain fire alarm systems in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and British Standards BS 5839:2002+A2:2008. Employers are responsible for their own fire safety risk assessments and have to judge what fire precautions are necessary to protect their employees.

The only reliable means of ensuring that your existing fire detection system remains compliant and fully functional is to instigate a plan of regular maintenance and testing. This should be carried out by a ‘competent person with specialist knowledge of fire detection and alarm systems’, supplemented by weekly user tests.

How often do our Fire Alarms need to be tested?

BS 5839-1:2002, as amended 2008, recommends weekly user tests with a record of each test in the building’s log book. Based on a risk assessment, this should be combined with periodic inspection and testing of the system by a ‘competent person’. The recommended interval between these inspections should not exceed six months. If this recommendation is not implemented, the system will not comply with the British Standard.
